WACO, Texas - Baylor pounded 18 hits, including four of the extra-base variety, en route to a doubleheader sweep of visiting Sam Houston State here Thursday. The Lady Bears won the opener 8-0 in five innings and took the nightcap 6-3. Baylor improves to 28-19 with the victories; Sam Houston State falls to 20-24.
The Lady Bears scored in the first inning of both games and are now 15-0 this season when scoring in the opening frame. Baylor put three runs on the board in the first inning of the opener. Sarah Caudle had an RBI double, and Danelle Arnold had a run-scoring single. BU added another run in the second and then exploded for four runs in the bottom of the fourth. Kelly Osburn had a two-run single in the fourth, her first RBI since March 9.
Meanwhile, Katie Decker was solving the SHSU bats with ease. Decker (7-5) allowed just two hits and a walk with two strikeouts for her second complete-game shutout of the season.
Kim Wilmoth finished the opener 2-for-2 with two runs and two RBI. Arnold had two hits and Caudle scored twice.
Baylor put four runs on the board in the first inning of the second game, capped by an Osburn three-run homer. It was her eighth long ball of the season but her first in 39 at bats.
The Lady Bears tacked on two more runs in the fourth. Kelly Levesque had an RBI single and Caudle scored her with a sacrifice fly.
Cristin Vitek pitched 3.2 innings of two-hit scoreless relief with two walks and six strikeouts, but she did not pitch long enough to qualify for the victory. Caudle (3-1) allowed three runs on four hits with a strikeout in the final 3.1 innings for the win.
Levesque finished the nightcap 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Harmony Schwethelm also had two hits.
Baylor returns to action this weekend, traveling to Ames, Iowa, for a two-game series at Iowa State. The Lady Bears and the Cyclones play Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m.
Notes: The all-time series between Baylor and Sam Houston State is now tied 28-28. Baylor has won 15 straight against SHSU. ... Kim Wilmoth (.374) now leads the team in batting average. It marks the first time since Feb. 7 that someone other than Kelly Osburn has led the Lady Bears in hitting. ... With her eighth home run of the season, Osburn is now tied for third all-time at Baylor for home runs in a season.
