WACO, Texas - Southwest Texas scored two runs on three hits in the top of the sixth inning and then withstood a strong Baylor charge in the bottom of the seventh, defeating the Lady Bears 2-1 in softball action here Tuesday night at Getterman Stadium.
The Lady Bears fall to 28-22 with the loss, dropping just its fourth non-conference home game in the past three years. The Bobcats improve to 35-13-1.
Southwest Texas out-hit Baylor 8-4 on the night, but it was the three hits in the sixth that caused the damage. Ashley Koop led off the inning with a triple off the wall in right-center; two batters later, Katie Ann Trahan blooped a single into right and scored Koop. Baylor got a break when pinch runner Katie Bard was called out for leaving first base early, but Ryan Stukel hit the next pitch over the wall in left, pushing the lead to 2-0.
Baylor did not go quietly, though, staging a rally in the bottom of the seventh. After a Harmony Schwethelm leadoff walk, Nan Wilkins doubled to right field to give the Lady Bears runners at second and third. Two outs later, Kim Wilmoth walked to load the bases, and Stacey Hundley followed with an RBI single to the hole at short.
The rally was squelched, though, as Bobcat starter Nicole Neuerburg fanned Sarah Caudle to end the game.
Lady Bear starter Cristin Vitek (12-12) was touched for two runs on eight hits with two strikeouts, tossing her 11th complete game of the season.
Neuerburg (25-6) allowed four hits and two walks with seven strikeouts.
Baylor returns to action Wednesday night, hosting fourth-ranked Texas at 6:30 p.m. The Longhorns defeated the Lady Bears 6-1 at Austin last month. Wednesday's game will be broadcast on KRZI 1660-1580 AM in the Waco area.
Notes: Baylor leads the all-time series with Southwest Texas 24-11. ... Stacey Hundley extended her season-long hitting streak to seven games.
