WACO, Texas - Missouri's Jeni Schellert hit a grand slam in the top of the first inning, and pitcher Erin Kalka made that stand as the visiting Tigers defeated Baylor 4-1 here Saturday in Big 12 Conference softball action. The Lady Bears fall to 28-25 with the loss, 2-13 in league play. The Tigers improve to 28-15 and 9-4, sweeping the two-game series.
After a ground out to begin the game, Missouri put together three consecutive singles. Schellert followed with her second home run of the season over the wall in left. Daisy Mettlach followed with a single through the left side, and that chased Baylor starter Sarah Caudle (3-3) from the game.
Katie Decker spelled Caudle and was masterful, allowing no runs on three hits and a walk with four strikeouts in 6.2 innings of work.
The Lady Bears scratched for a run in the bottom of the first on Nan Wilkins' two-out single down the line in right. However, that was all the scoring Baylor could manage on the day. Kalka (16-9) scattered five hits and a walk with six strikeouts for the complete-game victory.
Baylor plays its final three regular season games on the road, beginning with a 6:30 p.m. game Thursday at No. 20 Texas A&M. The Lady Bears defeated the Aggies 2-1 last month in Waco. Thursday's game will be broadcast on KRZI 1660/1580 AM in the Waco area and online at www.BaylorBears.com.
