Waco, Texas - Baylor has added a 25th signee to its 2003 football signing class, inking defensive tackle Mtyari "M.T." Robinson of Coffeyville (Kan.) Community College to a national letter of intent, head coach Guy Morriss announced Friday.
Robinson (6-1, 295) was a three-year starter and two-time all-district pick on both sides of the ball at Menchville High in Newport News, Va. He redshirted last season at Coffeyville and has four years of eligibility remaining. At Coffeyville, he was a teammate of fellow Bear signee Montez Murphy, a defensive end who went through Baylor's recently completed spring drills.
"He's a big, strong kid who moves well," Morriss said. "He understands that there is an opportunity at that position. Obviously we want him to come in and compete for a starting job. He needs to come in ready to play."
Graduation and academic questions at the position have made finding a defensive tackle a priority for Morriss. In Robinson, he has found someone who will enroll this summer and go through voluntary off-season conditioning with his new teammates.
Robinson collected 110 tackles, 10 quarterback hurries, 19 sacks and four fumble recoveries as a high school senior. He also won the state heavyweight wrestling championship in Virginia and the National Junior Olympics title.
Baylor's 2003 signing class also includes DB Joshua Bell (Dallas-Skyline), RB Quincy Cosby (Mart), DB Braelon Davis (Dallas-Carter), OL Chris Evans (Dallas-Carter), DB Nick Fellows (Dallas-Skyline), LB Marcus Foreman (Hewitt-Midway), RB Brandon Garrett (Hooks), K Ryan Havens (Odessa-Permian), WR Derrick Jones (Wylie), DB Maurice Linquist (Mesquite), OL John Mahaffey (Tyler-Lee), TE Michael Miller (Lake Charles, LA-Barbe), DB Brannan Moton (Pittsburg), DE Montez Murphy (Centreville, IL-Coffeyville [KS] CC), OL Nick Pace (Katy-Cinco Ranch), QB Terrance Parks (Lufkin), DB Kyle Seals (Arlington-Sam Houston), OL Chad Smith (Allen), OL Kellen Taylor (Richmond-Foster), OL Michael Trice (Stephenville), RB Brandon Whitaker (Edmond, OK-Santa Fe), DB C.J.
