WACO, Texas - Despite a Getterman Stadium record crowd of 840, Baylor softball struggled offensively here Saturday in a 2-0 loss to sixth-ranked Nebraska in the first game of a two-game weekend series. The Lady Bears fall to 25-17 on the season and 1-6 in conference play with the loss. The Huskers improve to 27-9 and 4-4.
Nebraska starter Peaches James kept the Baylor batters off balance all day, finishing with five strikeouts and no walks. James (14-7) surrendered just two hits, a wind-aided fly ball that dropped in shallow center for a double in the third and a looping single to center in the fourth.
The Huskers took the lead in the top of the third, thanks to two hits and a fielder's choice. Anne Steffan beat out a bouncer in front of the plate and then moved to third on a Kim Ogee single to right. Nicole Trimboli followed with a bouncer to Baylor second baseman Stacey Hundley, who fielded the ball and threw home. However, Steffan slid in under the tag for the first run of the game.
Trimboli added an insurance run for Nebraska in the top of the fifth, lifting the first pitch she saw over the wall in right for her fourth home run of the season.
Katie Decker (6-4) went the distance for the Lady Bears, allowing two runs on five hits and a pair of walks. Kelly Levesque and Sarah Caudle accounted for the only Baylor hits on the day.
