In her four years at Baylor, senior Sarah Caudle has seen a rejuvenation of the Baylor softball program. Caudle sat down with Baylor Athletic Marketing student assistant Becky Britt recently for a short Q&A session.
What CD is in your CD player right now?
"This is embarrassing: Carly Simon's Greatest Hits. I have been jamming that lately!"
What TV show could you not live without?
"'Will & Grace,' definitely! It's so awesome!"
What makes you laugh?
"Oh wow; this is a hard one! What doesn't make me laugh? I'm the most giggly person ever! I guess silly guys, being goofy, people on the team like Harmony Schwethelm. Stacey Hundley, my roommate and one of my best friends, is the cattiest, most sarcastic person I know, and Nan Wilkins is about the silliest girl you will ever meet."
Do you remember your first game at Baylor? What things were going through your head?
"Oh yeah. My first game for Baylor was at UTA, and I was scared to death! I just kept telling myself, hit the ball, hit the ball, don't think crazy things, just hit the ball. And I hit a triple."
What is the first thing you think of when you wake up in the morning?
"What I have to do in the day. Life is so busy with softball practice and school; you have to be the most organized person all the time. I make out a checklist the night before of all that I have to do the next day. So, the next morning that's what I'm thinking about. I'm totally OCD! It feels so good to check things off my list!"
What is your earliest softball memory?
"I was probably in 10-and-unders, playing shortstop and I was a munchkin! My dad, who is totally the calmest guy on the face of the earth, started screaming at me because I made a mistake. He was over in right field just yelling at me because I had made some stupid error. I turn around and go, 'Shut up Dad!' He started laughing because he knew he needed to calm down."
What is the atmosphere like on the team?
"We seriously have the nicest, most likeable girls that I have ever been on a team with. We do everything together! They are just good people. We have a lot of laughs and silliness going on. We are very girly girls. Before games we always have make-up sessions. And it's really funny because here we are, a softball team in the locker room putting on make-up before a game. Who knows what the other teams are doing? But that's us!"
What is your guilty pleasure?
"I have a lot of guilty pleasures! Probably carbs is the biggest. I'm a carb girl; I love breads and pastas."
If you could have dinner with three people, living or dead, who would they be?
"Alex Rodriguez, number one, love him, going to marry him; John F. Kennedy Jr., I think he was very interesting; and Matthew McConaughey, I love him!"
Who is the biggest flirt on the team?
(lots of laughter) "Katie Decker!"
What was the most pressure-acked situation you have ever been in?
"My freshman year we were playing Southern Miss, who was ninth in the nation. We were down by one and there were two runners on base. Courtney Blades, the third-best pitcher in the country, was pitching. I hadn't hit all day and I hit a triple in the sixth inning."
What do you admire most about Coach Moore?
"His ability to bring a family atmosphere to the team. I think in college athletics that is missing a lot, especially in softball. His family is always around and very involved. They travel on the bus with us. (Having them around) relaxes the atmosphere a lot and makes kids like me, who are far away from home, feel like they have a family."
How do you handle criticism?
"Not very good. I don't handle criticism well because I don't like to criticize. I think with young women, it's just not a good thing. With girls there is just a certain way to go about it without being demeaning. I just don't like it when people harp, harp, harp on you. A lot of times women need an explanation as to why they are being criticized. So, I do not like criticism, it doesn't help anyone."
Why did you choose Baylor over the other schools that recruited you?
"Number one, because I wanted to go to a really good academic school. With softball, we don't have a major league that we can go to to make millions of dollars, so I wanted to make sure that I had a great degree. When Baylor called me up, the coach sounded like so much fun. So, I came on a visit and loved it so much that I canceled my other two visits. Being from California I loved how nice the Texas people were."
What is your most prized possession?
"My mom and dad. They have brought me through everything. Even being three states away, they are my foundation. They are so supportive and wonderful."
What is your craziest ambition?
"I have always wanted to be a singer, but I can't sing! I can just see myself on the stage, belting out stuff. I would love to be a Celine Dion or a Gwen Stefani."
What are three words that describe you?
"Crazy, silly and loyal."
Nobody knows how much I like to____________________.
