WACO, Texas - Baylor right fielder David Murphy was named first-team All-America by the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA). The honor is Murphy's fourth different all-America selection this season. He was also named first-team all-America by Baseball America, the National Collegiate Baseball Writers' Association and CollegeBaseballInsider.com.
A junior from Spring, Texas, Murphy earned consensus all-Big 12 first-team honors in 2003 after hitting .413 with 11 home runs and 67 RBI; his 121 hits set a new school and Big 12 record. Earlier this month, the Boston Red Sox selected Murphy with the 17th overall pick of the first round in the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.
Murphy had earlier been voted to the ABCA All-Midwest Region First Team, along with teammate Ross Bennett. Bennett, a senior from Cape Girardeau, Mo., hit .354 with four home runs and 46 RBI while splitting time between first base and designated hitter. The honor was Bennett's second-straight all-region selection.
Senior centerfielder Chris Durbin was named to the All-Midwest Region Second Team. Durbin, a four-year letterman from Wylie, Texas, led the nation with 94 runs scored this season. His 18 home runs ranked second in the Big 12 Conference; Durbin also added a .346 average and 23 doubles to his batting line.
Baylor has earned three or more all-region selections for six straight seasons. The honor was a first for Murphy; Durbin and Bennett had each been previously honored.
Baylor saw its 2003 season end in an NCAA Super Regional defeat, losing to LSU two games to one. The Bears finished with a 45-23 record, tying the 2000 team for most wins in a season, and set new team single-season marks in eight statistical categories, including batting average, hits, doubles and total bases. The year also saw Baylor players set or match single-season records for hits (David Murphy, 121), runs (Chris Durbin, 94) and doubles (Michael Griffin, 26).
