WACO, Texas - Baylor Men's Golf Coach Tim Hobby announced his resignation Friday to take a job as Director of Instruction at San Antonio's Club at Sonterra.
Hobby, Baylor's head golf coach since 1996, has led the Bears to six-straight NCAA Tournament appearances, including a 19th-place finish in 2002. In 2001, he directed the Bears to the Big 12 Championship and earned conference coach of the year honors.
"This is a great opportunity for me and my family," Hobby said. "It gives me a chance to pursue my passion, which is full-time teaching, while allowing me an opportunity to spend more time at home. I have two young children and would like to spend the next 12 or 13 years watching them grow up.
"Baylor is my school. There isn't another place in the country where I'd rather be the golf coach. I'd like to thank our athletic director, Tom Stanton, and President (Robert) Sloan for their support. They're responsible for what I believe are the nicest college golf facilities in the nation."
Hobby is a 1990 graduate of Baylor, where he was a three-year golf letterwinner.
"What Tim and this program has accomplished and what Tim has left in terms of a foundation is light years away from where the Baylor golf program was when Tim came here," Stanton said. "Tim has represented Baylor with class and integrity both as a player and as a coach. We wish him well, but he'll be missed."
Stanton said that a nationwide search for Hobby's replacement will begin immediately.
"This was unexpected, so I'll lean on Tim's expertise in coming up with a list of names to be his successor."
