WACO, Texas - Baylor's football team donned full pads for the first time to participate in the fall's first scrimmage Saturday afternoon at the Baylor practice fields on campus.
"The attitude and effort was good, the enthusiasm was good," head coach Guy Morriss said following the two-hour practice. "Obviously we have some things to correct. We've got to work on our pass protection, we gave up nine sacks today."
Morriss praised the defense, which in addition to nine sacks totaled two interceptions and two fumble recoveries. Sophomore safety Maurice Lane set the defensive tone early with a 49-yard interception return for a touchdown against the No. 1 offense on the fifth series of the day.
Offensive standouts included redshirt freshman tight end Iris Williams and freshman running back Brandon Whitaker. Williams scored on a 20-yard TD reception from Aaron Karas and also set up a field goal with a 50-yard catch-and-run from Karas. Whitaker caught a 15-yard TD pass from redshirt freshman quarterback Shawn Bell.
"We had good plays on offense and good plays on defense," Morriss said. "The key now is to be consistent."
The Bears will return to shorts Sunday for a single practice session before returning to two-a-days Monday. All practice sessions are open to the public.
The 2003 season begins Aug. 30 when Baylor hosts UAB at Floyd Casey Stadium.
