WACO, Texas - With temperatures climbing well above 100 degrees, Baylor hit the football field for the first day of preseason workouts here Wednesday. Working out in shorts, the Bears took several water breaks on a day where the mercury reached 106 degrees with a heat index approaching 115 degrees.

"It was a hot one; no doubt about it," first-year head coach Guy Morriss said. "But I thought our kids worked through it well. There were more balls on the ground today than I would have liked, but that will improve as we go along."

Baylor continues in shorts until Saturday's first practice in pads. Two-a-days, under the NCAA's new two-and-one schedule, begin Sunday. Teams are limited to one practice on days following a two-practice day. All practices are open to the public.

The 2003 season begins Aug. 30 as the Bears host UAB at Floyd Casey Stadium.
