WACO, Texas - Chase Gerdes, a redshirt-freshman outfielder/pitcher on Baylor's 11th-ranked baseball team, is out 6-8 weeks due to a fracture in his left foot that requires surgery. The left-handed product of Uvalde [Texas] High School was penciled in to be the Bears' opening-day starter in center field.
Gerdes finished second in the Northwoods League in batting last summer with a .335 average, trailing only Baylor teammate Mike Pankratz. He tallied five doubles, five home runs, 20 RBI and scored 31 times. Gerdes also swiped 12 bases in 17 attempts while leading the Wausau Woodchucks to the second-half South Division title.
Baylor's 2004 season begins Feb. 13-15 as the Bears host Loyola Marymount for a three-day, three-game series at Baylor Ballpark. Friday's game begins at 6 p.m., Saturday's at 3 p.m. and the Sunday finale at 1 p.m.
