WACO - Zuzana Krchnakova was Baylor's lone winner as the No. 4 Duke Blue Devils posted a 6-1 win over the 32nd-ranked Bears at Vanderbilt University's Currey Tennis Center in Nashville on Saturday.
Duke swept all three doubles matches to begin the day. Baylor freshmen Carolin Walter and Klara Zrustova, playing at No. 2 doubles, made the Bears' best showing, pushing Duke's Saras Arasu and Julia Smith to 8-4. Stephanie Balzert and Daria Potapova lost to Duke's 5th-ranked Amanda Johnson and Tory Zawacki, 8-2 and Iva Mihaylova and Izabela Mijic were winless against freshmen Jennifer Zika and Parker Goyer, 8-0.
Krchnakova won at No. 3 singles to record the Bears' only victory of the day. After dropping the first set 6-2, Krchnakova regrouped to defeat 89th-ranked Tory Zawacki 7-5, 6-4. Two other Baylor players extended their matches to three sets but couldn't pull out a win. At No. 4 singles, Duke's Arasu won 6-3, 1-6, 7-5 and Baylor's Mihaylova won the first set over Smith, ranked No. 95, 6-2 but lost the next two by identical 6-3 scores.
The victory moves Duke's record to 1-0 while Baylor is 0-2.
The Bears will play two more matches on the road when they take on the Georgia Bulldogs on Jan. 31 in Athens, Ga., at 3 p.m. (CST) and then play at Clemson on Feb. 1 at 10 a.m.
