WACO, Texas - Seven members of Baylor's women's tennis team will compete in the Wilson/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Southwest Women's Regional Championships October 15-19 at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center in College Station, Texas. All seven players will compete in singles and the Bears will field three doubles tandems. Admission to the five-day event is free.
Texas A&M will host the tournament which will feature top players from 23 Division I schools. Top teams competing besides Texas A&M and Baylor are Tulane, Texas, LSU, TCU, SMU and Rice.
Seventeen ITA Regional Championships for NCAA Division I men and women are taking place over these last two weekends of October at campuses throughout the country. The singles finalists and doubles champion from the regional competitions earn spots in the ITA/ National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, November 4-7, at the University of Michigan.
Representing Baylor in singles competition, which begins on Saturday, are Zuzana Cerna, Daniela Covello, Zuzana Krchnakova, Iva Mihaylova, Carolin Walter, Zuzana Zemenova and Klara Zrustova. Walter, a sophomore, is seeded No. 2 in the tournament behind Texas' Petra Dizdar and Zemenova, a freshman, is seeded No. 6. Of Baylor's seven individuals competing in the tournament, only two players, Iva Mihaylova and Zuzana Krchnakova, saw action in the regionals last year.
All doubles will get under way on Friday at 3:30 p.m. Cerna and Zemenova are seeded No. 4 and will take on Marina Chiarelli and Tiffany Tucker of LSU. Covello and Walter, seeded No. 5, will play TCU's Melissa Bere and Lindsay McBride and Mihaylova and Zrustova will face off against UT-San Antonio's Paula Erasquin and Barbara Mooney. Doubles winners will move on to the round of 32 and compete on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. while losers will slip to the consolation bracket.
