WACO, Texas - Two Baylor doubles teams posted victories on Friday in first round action of the Wilson/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Southwest Women's Regional Championships at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center in College Station, Texas.
Texas A&M is hosting the tournament which features top players from 23 Division I schools. Top teams competing besides Texas A&M and Baylor are Tulane, Texas, LSU, TCU, SMU and Rice.
Seventeen ITA Regional Championships for NCAA Division I men and women are taking place over these last two weekends of October at campuses throughout the country. The singles finalists and doubles champion from the regional competitions earn spots in the ITA/ National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, November 4-7, at the University of Michigan.
Both of Baylor's doubles teams won their round of 64 matches on Friday. The fourth seeded tandem of Zuzana Cerna and Daniela Covello easily defeated TCU's Melissa Bere and Lindsay McBride, breezing to an 8-1 win. Zuzana Krchnakova and Klara Zrustova had an even easier time moving on the the round of 32. Their opponents, UT-San Antonio's Paula Erausquin and Babara Mooney, withdrew due to an injury. Both of Baylor's doubles teams will play at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday. Cerna and Covello will face Erin Hunter and Katja Kovacic of Texas Tech and Krchnakova and Zrustova will take on the tournament's No. 9 seed, Petra Dizdar and Ristine Olson of Texas.
Representing Baylor in singles competition, which begins on Saturday, are Zuzana Cerna, Daniela Covello, Zuzana Krchnakova, Iva Mihaylova and Klara Zrustova.
