It is not often that a team is just going to beat up on another team, especially in the conference that we play in. If a team is going to lose, it is most likely what it did to itself, not what the other team did to it. This was the case with the game that we just played at Nebraska.
The defense started out and forced Nebraska's offense to go three and out, and our offense followed that by driving down and kicking a field goal. We then began to self-destruct a little bit and they started making not just big plays, but huge plays. Plays such as a 70-yard screen for a touchdown and a long touchdown pass right before the half were plays, for example, that showed that our defense in particular was not executing.
Execution and lack of focus are probably the main reasons that our team is now 2-4. These problems, however, are very fixable and we are going to devote a lot of energy on fixing them this week. We also need to create more turnovers on defense and of course not turn the ball over on offense.
We still have a very good, capable team that can still win some more games this year if we will start doing things right. Iowa State is a team that we can bounce back on and play the kind of football that we know we can play as we continue through our Big 12 schedule. Saturday's game against the Cyclones will mark the halfway point in the conference season. Both teams will be hungry to get a win, so expect a hard-fought game on both sides of the ball.
To those who made the effort to go watch us play in Nebraska, your devotion does not go unnoticed and I want personally thank those who do support our football team, through good and bad. Come watch us play next week against Iowa State and be loud and be proud.
Sic 'em Bears,
Justin
