WACO, Texas - Baylor's women's tennis' Zuzana Cerna lost in the round of 128 in the prequalifying draw of the 2004 Riviera/ITA All-American Championships on the campus of UCLA in Los Angeles, Calif.
On Saturday morning, Cerna, a sophomore, faced Elena Gantcheva of UNLV. Gantcheva won the first set 6-2 but Cerna rallied to even the match by taking the second set 7-5. Gantcheva gained the victory with a 6-2 triumph in the third set. The loss dropped Cerna out of the single elimination tournament.
Zuzana Zemenova, a freshman, was slated to play in the prequalifying rounds of the tournament but has advanced to the semifinals of the USTA's Challenger tournament in Pelham, Ala., therefore she wasn't available to compete in the ITA All-American Tournament.
Sophomore Carolin Walter will begin competition in the tournament on Tuesday, Oct. 5 when play in the 64-player qualifying draw begins. The qualifying draw and the main draws will be played at the Riviera Tennis Club in Los Angeles.
The ITA Women's Championships is the first of three national singles and doubles titles of the 2004-05 collegiate season. The Nov. 4-7 ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships and the year-end NCAA Championships are the other two national collegiate tournaments.
