Baylor head football coach Guy Morriss sat down with the media for his weekly press conference to discuss the upcoming game against Missouri as well as last week's contest against the Longhorns.
On performance against Texas being a gage of where the team is...
"From an effort standpoint and a physical standpoint we were pleased with the kids effort. We just have to understand in big games all those little mistakes come back to haunt you. We need to find a way to get those things eliminated."
On Dane King...
"We feel like he's making significant progress, I think he manages the game well. He's becoming more and more of a spokesperson in the huddle. I think he's developing a little bit of a swagger and I think he's becoming more comfortable in the system and the things that Coach Pease is trying to get him to do."
On responding to receivers' dropped balls...
"You talk to them, and they've heard it from all of us. We've got to catch the ball, now I think what you do is go out there and get them back on the jugs machine and just keep catching footballs. I think at some point they've heard enough. I think at a certain point, you can really create a problem for yourself since they get so conscious of it then they start developing bad habits. They know they messed up, they know they dropped balls they should have caught and so we go back to work this week and catch those balls and hopefully that will correct it."
On the 9pm game next week...
"You know it's a long day, and you can really burn up a lot of nervous energy waiting. Obviously, we're thrilled that we're playing on national TV and get a chance to capture the nation for about three to three and a half hours, and hopefully put on a good show. There are a lot of positives of being on television, it just happened to fall at 9 o'clock. The trade off is worth it, definitely."
On TV game...
I think that it motivates our players. I think it motivates any college kid because they enjoy playing on television. It is something they look forward to."
On Missouri's quarterback being similar to Texas...
"They are similar, I think their running game is a little bit different to Texas. It's not like a power game I don't think. But the fact that you've got two guys out of the same cut of cloth, that think they can beat you anywhere on the field, especially running, does it make it any easier to see Vincent Young and then Brad Smith, I don't know. They're a little bit different style; but, I guess it helps to see one guy before the other one."
On Missouri's defense...
"They're ranked third in the Big 12 in total defense. They've got a very active front seven. They've got some good folks up front and they move them around and they'll blitz you from everywhere on the field, and come from all angles. I think their motto is just to go all out for that seven or eight seconds when the ball is snapped and create as many turnovers as you can, and that's what they're doing."
On Baylor's defense...
I think we've got to keep progressing, getting better. We've got to be a little bit more disciplined up front in our gap responsibilities, that has kind of hurt us a little bit. We're going have to do some things I think kind of like what Missouri is doing. We cannot sit up front and just challenge people, because we are not talented enough to do that; but, if we can create some confusion and give them different looks and do some slanting and those kind of things, our defense can keep us in most of our ball games."
