WACO, Texas - Baylor's Willie Andrews and Shawn Bell earned Big 12 Conference player of the week honors Monday following the Bears' historic 35-34 overtime upset of 16th-ranked Texas A&M at Floyd Casey Stadium. Andrews was named Co-Special Teams Player of the Week by the league office, while Bell was named Offensive Player of the Week by the Dallas Morning News.
The conference's defensive player of the week earlier this season, Andrews is the first Bear to earn Big 12 player of the week honors twice in one season. He tallied 164 yards in total kick returns against the Aggies with 58 yards on three punt returns and 106 yards on three kickoff returns. His career-long 59-yard kickoff return late in the fourth quarter set the stage for the Bears' game-tying touchdown drive in the game's final three minutes.
A native of Longview, Texas, Andrews had five tackles, including one sack, and broke up one pass. He shares the weekly honor with Texas Tech's Danny Amendola, who had a 90-yard punt return for a touchdown in the Red Raiders' 35-25 victory over Kansas State.
Bell etched his name in Baylor football lore, completing 32 of 50 passes for 262 yards and four touchdowns with no interceptions in leading the Bears to their first victory over Texas A&M since 1985. In his first start of the season and just the third of his career, Bell established a school record for completions in a game and tied the Baylor single-game record for touchdowns.
A product of China Spring [Texas] High School, Bell guided the Bears on two scoring drives in the game's final seven minutes, both of which ended with touchdown passes. He then connected with Dominique Zeigler twice in overtime, first for a 12-yard touchdown and then for the game-winning two-point conversion. Bell was 16-of-23 for 139 yards and three touchdowns in the fourth quarter and overtime.
Baylor returns to action Saturday, traveling to Lubbock, Texas, for a 1 p.m. CST game against Texas Tech at Jones SBC Stadium.
