Women's Tennis Fares Well in Florida

WACO, Texas - Women's tennis sent two players, Zuzana Cerna and Klara Zrustova, to the Lady Seminole Classic in Tallahassee, Fla., this past weekend and both players fared well. Cerna won the Flight #2 championships and the two players teamed up to make it to the championship match in doubles.

The two Baylor sophomores joined players from host-Florida State, Georgia Tech, Central Florida, Stetson, Virginia, Temple, South Florida, Bethune Cookman, Florida A&M and Jacksonville in the tournament. Competition was split between six flight in singles and three flights in doubles. Zrustova competed in Flight #1 and Cerna was in Flight #2. They teamed up to play doubles in Flight #1.

All three of Zrustova's matches were hard-fought, three-set affairs. She won her first match, 4-6, 6-0, 6-2, by downing Marta Bechliwanis of the University of Virginia. In her second match, she lost to eventual champion and 55th- ranked Kelly Anderson of Georgia Tech, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. She took third place when she defeated Ana Maslesa of Temple, 3-6, 6-1, 6-1.

Cerna claimed the Flight #2 singles championship by breezing through the tournament with a 3-0 record. All three of her matches were two-set victories. Cerna bested Georgia Tech's Alison Silverio in the first round, 6-1, 6-3, and beat Central Florida's Pamela Fernandez, 6-4, 6-1, in the second round action. She defeated Lindsay Deason of Florida State, 6-2, 6-4, to claim the flight title.

In doubles, Cerna and Zrustova teamed together for the first time and advanced to the championship of the Flight #1 bracket. They defeated Stetson's Milica Milovanovic and Maja Miladinovic, 8-4, in first round action and posted an 8-2 win over Liz Cruz and Fabiana Taverna of South Florida in the second round. The Baylor tandem lost in the championship match to Kelly Anderson and Esther Van Londen of Georgia Tech, 8-6.

The entire Baylor women's team returns to action next weekend as Cerna and Daniela Covello have qualified to compete in the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships at the University of Michigan, Nov. 4-7. Some members of the team will travel to Houston to compete in the Houston Invitational. Nov. 5-7 and others will participate in the Fall Desert Classic in Palm Springs, Calif., Nov. 5-8.
