WACO, Texas-Baylor softball head coach Glenn Moore announced the signing of five student-athletes to National Letters of Intent on Thursday. The class includes four high school student-athletes in addition to one junior college transfer.
"We are replacing our first signing class at Baylor with this signing class and we could not be happier," Moore said. "We are very excited about the talent we have coming in and we plan on seeing a few all-conference selections from this group. Team speed, power and pitching are all addressed with this group of players."
The signing class includes four high school players from Texas: Alex Colyer (Stratford HS; Houston, Texas), Lauren Parker (Monsignor Kelly HS; Port Neches, Texas), Brette Reagan (Tomball HS; Magnolia, Texas) and Brittany Turner (Brewer HS; Fort Worth, Texas). In addition, the Lady Bears signed junior college transfer Miriam Romero (Pima CC; Douglas, Ariz.).
Alex Colyer
Colyer, a utility infielder, was a first-team all-state selection last season while playing at Stratford HS. She is currently ranked first in her class academically out of 500 students and plays travel ball with the Houston Power Gold.
"She has good hitting skills and can provide a tremendous amount of power," Moore said. "We think she will be a great addition to the program."
Lauren Parker
Parker will join the team after a stellar high school career with Monsignor Kelly HS while playing travel ball with the Beaumont Blast Gold. The left-handed hitter can be used as a utility middle infielder or outfielder.
"Lauren (Parker) is an extremely hard worker who will bring a great deal to the program," Moore said. "She is the type of player who likes to make thing happen; so, she fits in well with our style of play."
Brette Reagan
A first-team all-state selection last season, Reagan will join the Bears after a standout career at Tomball HS. The right-handed hitting third-baseman also has played club ball with the Impact Gold, Texas Hawks and Team New Jersey and is currently ranked in the top-five percent of her class.
"We are extremely excited to sign Brette (Reagan)," head coach Glenn Moore said. "She was sought after by several schools and is a strong hitter who should provide an immediate impact."
Brittany Turner
Turner will join the Lady Bears after earning numerous accolades at Brewer HS in Fort Worth, Texas. The right-handed pitcher earned an all-state selection last season and was named the District 8-4A Pitcher of the Year in 2003. She currently ranks in the top-five percent of her class and is a Wendy's High School Heisman Trophy Nominee this season.
"Brittany (Turner) is a hard throwing right-hander with a great change-up," Moore said. "She should play an important role for the team once she arrives."
Miriam Romero
Finally, Romero will join the Lady Bears program after finishing out her playing career at Pima (Ariz.) CC in Tucson, Ariz. The native of Douglas, Ariz., helped lead Pima CC to a record of 70-8 and the NJCAA Div. I national championship while playing outfield for the Aztec.
"She is a speedy outfielder with great base-running skills," Moore said. "She has won at every level she has played and we are excited to have her join our program next year."
The signing class marks the largest early-signing class for head coach Glenn Moore since the Lady Bears signed five during the early-signing period in 2002. Baylor will open the 2005 season when the Lady Bears host Louisiana-Monroe at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 4, to open the Getterman Classic.
