Volleyball Takes Care of Iowa State 3-1

WACO, Texas - Baylor was efficient offensively and defensively except for a slip up in game two as the Bears cruised past Iowa State, 3-1 (30-20, 19-30, 30-20, 30-28) in Big 12 Conference volleyball action Saturday night at the Ferrell Center.
Sophomore right-side hitter Nicole LeBlanc (Tampa, Fla.) led the Bears (12-14, 4-11 Big 12) with 18 kills and added 14 digs for her eighth double-double of the season. Junior outside hitter Stella Odion (Houston, Texas) posted her seventh double-double of the year with 14 kills and 10 digs, while junior setter Emily Huston (Santa Rosa, Calif.) registered her 10th double-double of the season with 48 assists, 13 digs to go along with six assists and five blocks.
Sophomore middle blocker Desiree Guilliard-Young (Berkeley, Calif.) added 13 kills and seven blocks, while junior outside hitter Kelly Spriggs (Houston, Texas) pitched in with 10 kills. Freshman libero Kristen Schramek (San Antonio, Texas) led the Bears defensively with 15 digs, while junior middle blocker Adeline Meira (Sao Paulo, Brazil) had a career-high 13 digs, a career-high eight assists and four blocks.
Katie Jessen led Iowa State (8-16, 1-14) with 15 kills, while Nicole Lorenzen added 13. Brittany Dalager had a match-high 18 digs, while Lorenzen had 10 for a double-double.
"We had an up-and-down match," head coach Jim Barnes said. "We were trying a number of new things, tinkering with our lineups, so we new there would be some lapses, but the girls hung in there and pulled it out."
Game one looked to have the makings of a close one, but every time Iowa State pulled within two, Baylor would jump back up by four or five. The Bears led 24-20 after a Cyclone sideout, but Baylor scored the final six points of the game, which included a pair of kills and a pair of blocks by Guilliard-Young. Baylor hit .419 while holding Iowa State to .029 to take the game, 30-20.
Baylor struggled offensively as Iowa State put up a great block in game two. The Cyclones jumped out to an 18-10 lead then took a 14-point advantage at 27-13 with a eight-point run behind the serve of Dalager. Iowa State only hit .150 for the game, but posted six blocks and held the Bears to -.085 hitting for the game to even the match with a 30-19 victory.
The Bears came out aggressive after the break and scored six straight to take a 14-9 lead. Iowa State hung close and were down only 23-19 when the Bears ripped off a six-point run to put the game out of reach. Baylor came back to hit .282 in the game and held Iowa State to .073.
Baylor steadily built a lead in game four, taking as much as a seven-point lead at 25-18. When the Bears went to match point at 29-22, Iowa State came to life and scored six straight to get to within one before LeBlanc put away the final point for a 30-28 win. The Cyclones hit .268 for the game, while the Bears hit .244.
Baylor hit .190 for the match due in large part to game two's performance, while Iowa State hit .134. The Bears outdug the Cyclones, 66-57 and outblocked them, 14.0-9.0. Iowa State outblocked Baylor, 8.0-4.0, through the first two games, but the Bears outblocked the Cyclones, 10.0-1.0, in games three and four.
The Bears return to action when they hit the road to face Kansas Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the Horejsi Family Athletic Center in Lawrence, Kan.
