Lady Bears Sweep Pair of Games at Cougar Invitational

Houston, Texas-The Baylor Lady Bears swept a pair of games to conclude the Cougar Invitational in action at Cougar Field today. Baylor opened the day by posting a 5-1 victory over Sam Houston State and followed with a 3-1 victory over Louisiana-Monroe, in a contest that was continued after play had been suspended on Friday.

In the opener, the Lady Bears scored all the runs they would need when BU posted three in the second inning. After Chelsi Lake and April Luce each singled, Danelle Arnold blasted a home run down the left field line to give Baylor a 3-0 lead.

The Bearkats scored a run in the bottom of the inning off of Amber McAvoy's solo home run to cut the lead to 3-1; but, the Lady Bears posted single runs in the fourth and seventh innings for a 5-1 victory.

In the fourth inning, Harmony Schwethelm collected one of her career-high three hits on the day, singling in Wilmoth to make the score 4-1.

Baylor added the final run on the day when Kelly Levesque scored on a single by Luce down the third base line.

Cristin Vitek (4-1) picked up her fourth victory of the year, tossing a complete game while allowing only one run on five hits.

Melissa Hayslip, who allowed three runs on four hits, took the loss for the Bearkats.

In the second game, after taking a 3-1 lead into the day, Baylor closed out the Indians by the same score.

Lisa Ferguson (3-1) won her third game of the year, retiring nine of the ten batters she faced once play resumed and finished with a complete game while allowing one unearned run on three hits.

Chelsi Lake and Kelly Levesque each had RBI's during the game, as Baylor improved its record to 7-3 on the season.

Nicole Bethurum (1-3) took the loss for Louisiana-Monroe.

Baylor will return to action next weekend at the Palm Springs Classic in Palm Springs, Calif. At the tournament, the Lady Bears will face Tennessee on the opening day before facing top-ranked UCLA at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, February 20.
