Dallas, Texas - Junior left-handed pitcher Cristin Vitek has been named Big 12 Conference Pitcher of the Week the conference office announced today. The honor marks the second time this season a Lady Bear has been named pitcher of the week, as Baylor's Lisa Ferguson earned the conference's first honor of the season.
Vitek went 2-1 on the weekend at the Palm Springs Classic with an ERA of 0.55. In 12.2 innings of work, the Katy, Texas, native allowed only six hits and one earned run while striking out 13. Opponents had a batting average of just .136 on the weekend against the left-handed hurler.
Vitek allowed only one walk on the weekend as she recorded both of the Lady Bears victories. In the victory over nationally-ranked Cal State Fullerton, Vitek came into the game in relief of Ferguson and pitched 3.2 innings while allowing only one hit and no walks while striking out five. She faced only one batter over the minimum against Bethune-Cookman, pitching 5.0 innings of one hit ball while striking out five.
Her selection marks the eighth time in school history a Lady Bear pitcher has earned the honor. It is the second time in her career she has been selected pitcher of the week, with her first selection coming on March 12, 2002.
Baylor will return to action on Friday, February 27, when the Lady Bears host the Compass Bank Invitational at Getterman Stadium. Baylor will open play in the tournament at 3:00 p.m. on Friday against Lipscomb.
