Waco, Texas - The Baylor Lady Bears softball team scored a season high 11 runs to defeat Sam Houston State in game one of a doubleheader before riding the arm of freshman pitcher Lisa Ferguson for a victory in game two to complete a doubleheader sweep of the Bearkats in action at the Bearkat Softball Complex.
In game one, the Lady Bears tied a season high by pounding out 12 hits, cruising to an 11-7 victory over Sam Houston State. In game two, with the score tied at zero heading into the seventh, the Lady Bears posted two runs and went on to complete the doubleheader sweep with a 2-0 victory.
With the wins, Baylor moves to 26-6 overall and has won 19 of the last 20 games.
Baylor fell behind 2-1 in game one of the doubleheader after one inning of play; however, outscored the Bearkats 10-2 before Sam Houston State put four runs on the board in its last at-bat.
Harmony Schwethelm, who currently leads the team in batting average, had another outstanding game for Baylor, going three for three with a run scored and three RBI.
Kim Wilmoth also had a strong day at the plate, going two for three in game one and leading the team with three runs scored.
Nine separate players recorded hits in game one, including Amber Daniel, who hit a two-run single in the seventh inning to give Baylor a 9-3 lead.
Cristin Vitek came into the game in relief of Ferguson and pitched four innings to pick up the victory. Vitek now stands at 16-3 on the season.
Unlike game one, game two saw a pitcher's duel between Ferguson and Bearkat starter Melissa Collins.
Baylor was unable to get anything going in the first six innings, as Collins retired all 18 batters and carried a perfect game into the final inning.
Ferguson managed to keep the game tied for the Lady Bears, allowing only two hits through the first six innings without allowing a run.
In the seventh, with the score knotted at zero, Schwethelm led off the inning for the Lady Bears with a hit just in front of home plate as she beat the throw to first to give Baylor its first runner and hit of the game.
After Schwethelm was retired at second base on a Wilmoth fielder's choice, Melissa Maler stepped up to the plate with one out.
On a 1-2 pitch from Collins, Maler hit a line drive over the left field fence for a two-run home run, her second of the season, to give Baylor a 2-0 lead.
Ferguson came back into the game in the bottom of the inning and retired the Bearkats in order, moving her record to 10-1 on the season and recording her fifth shutout of the year.
On a current five-game win streak, the Lady Bears will look to make it seven in a row when the team takes on McNesse State in a doubleheader at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 16, in Lake Charles, La.
