The 45th-ranked Baylor women's tennis team upset No. 42 SMU 5-2 on Wednesday evening in Waco at the Baylor Tennis Center. Baylor is now .500 for the first time this season with an 8-8 record, while SMU holds a 12-8 record on the season.
SMU won the first point of the match early in doubles competition winning in all three positions. In the No. 3 spot, Stephanie Balzert and Iva Mihaylova fell to Svetlana Kouzmenko and Allison Leuszler 8-5. Next to finish were Daniela Covello and Klara Zrustova in the No. 2 position who were defeated by Nadia Vaughan and Lynsie Jones 8-5, giving SMU the doubles point. Carolin Walter and Daria Potapova finished last, falling to Kit Carson and Jenny Langer 9-7.
The Bears won the match in singles competition, coming out with victories in all but one position. First to finish was Stephanie Balzert, falling to SMU's Jenny Langer 6-1, 6-2 from the No. 3 position. Putting Baylor on the board was Daria Potapova who defeated Nadia Vaughan 6-0, 6-4 playing at No. 4. Baylor's 42nd ranked Carolin Walter brought Baylor back into the game with a victory over No. 83 Svetlana Kouzmenko. Putting Baylor in the lead, Klara Zrustova defeated Lynsie Jones 6-0, 7-6 (2) in a tie-breaker. Fifth to finish for Baylor, giving Baylor the win, was Iva Mihaylova at the No. 6 position with a score of 6-3, 6-4 over Halley Rambally. Topping off the win for Baylor, in the No. 2 position, was Daniela Covello, battling out a 6-4, 1-6, 6-2 defeat over SMU's Kit Carson.
Baylor has the week off as they prepare for their next match set for Thursday, April 8 at 6 p.m. at the Baylor Tennis Center against the No. 14 Texas A&M Aggies.
