It is 14 practices down and one to go for the Baylor football team, as the Bears put the final touches on preparations for Saturday's Green & Gold scrimmage with a 90-minute workout in helmets and shorts Thursday afternoon on the grass practice fields at Floyd Casey Stadium.

Earlier Thursday, the BU coaching staff drafted players for Saturday's scrimmage which starts at 1 p.m. The Bears' offensive (Brent Pease), defensive (Bill Bradley) and special teams (Mark Nelson) coordinators will handle their respective duties for both teams, while the remaining assistant coaches will direct the teams.

Redshirt freshman quarterback Terrance Parks was the first player taken in the staff's draft Thursday morning and will pilot the gold team's offense ahead of junior college transfer Dane King. The green team's offense will be led by sophomore Shawn Bell and senior Aaron Karas.

"Everyone was on the board (in the draft) and the coaches just picked the players they felt would fulfill their needs and give their team the best opportunity to win the game," said second-year head coach Guy Morriss. "It was just like the NFL Draft, here's the whole pool and take who you want.

"There were a couple of players who based on the depth chart weren't ranked as high on it as they were selected in the draft which was interesting," he added. "I think the coaches did a good job of splitting the teams up evenly. It all comes down to who wants to step up and make plays this Saturday."

The Green & Gold game kicks off at 1 p.m. this Saturday, April 17, in Floyd Casey Stadium and admission to the contest is free. Fans are encouraged, though, to bring a canned food item to support Mission Waco. The first 300 fans in attendance at the game will receive free t-shirts and all fans can pick up a copy of this year's 2004 schedule poster. All fans are also asked to sit in the West Stadium seating areas.

In addition the spring game, the Baylor men's and women's track and field teams will be hosting the annual Michael Johnson Invitational throughout the day on Saturday and the women's tennis team will host Oklahoma State at 2 p.m. on the Baylor Tennis Center courts.

Like last year's spring game, the first quarter will be played as a flag football game featuring former Baylor football letterwinners. Morriss' team will then pick up the game from the second quarter on with the alumni scoreboard serving as the starting point for the varsity contest. Following the varsity game, the players and coaches will be available for autographs on the field.

"The kids were excited about the draft and the game coming up which carried over to the football field today," Morriss said. "But, we moved around pretty good today with some 7-on-7 work and a lot of individual work, which is always good. We felt good about it (today's practice) and believe we've had a good spring."

Saturday's game will not be televised, however, the Baylor Radio Network's flagship station, KRZI AM 1660 in Waco, will carry the contest beginning at 1 p.m.
