WACO, Texas - Five Baylor student-athletes, including three first-team selections, were selected to the Men's and Women's Tennis Academic All-Big 12 Teams, the conference office announced Tuesday.
Junior Benjamin Becker, a finance major currently ranked No. 15 nationally, was named to the first team for the second straight year and women's players Stephanie Balzert and Zuzana Krchnakova also received first team honors. Balzert and Krchnakova, both sophomores, are pre-business majors at Baylor. Earning second team honors for the Bears are juniors Daria Potapova and Benedikt Dorsch. Potapova, a second time honoree, is majoring in marketing and Dorsch, ranked No. 3 in the nation, is an entrepreneurship major.
First team members consist of those who have maintained a GPA of 3.20 or higher, while the second team are those who have between a 3.00 and 3.19. To qualify student-athletes must maintain a GPA of 3.00 or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of the team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence.
Both the men's and the women's team will return to action at the 2004 Big 12 Tennis Championships Friday through Sunday at the Headington Family Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Oklahoma in Norman. The women will take on the winner of the Colorado/Iowa State match at noon on Friday and the men will play Nebraska on Friday at 3 p.m.
