The Baylor football team concluded its second week of spring practice with a two-hour and 20-minute workout in full pads Saturday morning on the Floyd Casey Stadium turf. The Bears began their workout on the grass fields, then moved into the stadium for the scrimmage portion of the practice.
Junior quarterback Dane King tossed a 70-yard touchdown pass to junior wide receiver Shaun Rochon to highlight the team work portion of practice. Senior running back Jonathan Golden scored a pair of touchdowns during BU's goal line situational work. Senior place-kicker Kenny Webb connected on a pair of 42-yard field goals and King also hit redshirt freshman tight end Mike Miller on a two-yard scoring pass during the workout.
"The tempo and work was better today, but we are dropping balls and throwing interceptions, which is a concern," Morriss said. "I guess we are at the midway point (of spring practice) and maybe they are getting mentally bogged down a little bit and don't have a lot to look forward to at the end of the week.
"Still, we are like every other college team in the country," he added. "We have got to be productive out here."
As his team begins its third week of spring drills on Monday, Morriss is hopeful his squad can clean up the little things on both side of the ball. The Bears are scheduled to work out four times next week, Monday through Thursday, before breaking for the Easter holiday weekend.
"We need to be a little more crisp and sharper mentally," Morriss said. "For the most part, other than Friday, the tempo has been pretty good. I'm not really concerned about tempo, but mentally, we have to be sharper on both sides of the ball."
Nearing the midway point of spring, Morriss said that the Bears' quarterback race is still a four-way battle between sophomore Shawn Bell, senior Aaron Karas, redshirt freshman Terrance Parks and King.
"As we have gone through the two weeks, I haven't seen anyone separate themselves from the pack right now," Morriss said. "They are all kind of bunched up."
The Bears will return to work on Monday with an evening practice at Floyd Casey Stadium before practicing during the afternoon on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. All practices are open to the public.
