April 3, 2004

Laredo, Texas - The Baylor men's golf team shot a final round 290 to finish in second place at the Border Olympics at the 7,125 yard Laredo Country Club hosted by Texas A&M. Junior Ryan Baca led the way for the Bears who have not finished outside of third in the last seven years at this event.

Baca (69-71-68=208) who finished tied for second for the second straight year at the event, fired two rounds in the 60's including a final round four-under-par 68 to pace the way for Baylor. Baca finished the tournament with a final round 68 and almost caught the overall winner Martin Laird of Colorado State who finished just one shot ahead of him. Freshman Jeremy Alcorn (72-68-77=217) concluded the event in a tie for 16th.

Also providing help for the Bears was Senior Jon Antunes (71-74-73=218) who fired a one-over-par 73 in the final round to finish in a tie for 21st and Senior Will Doughtie (74-70-75=219) who finished in a tie for 23rd. Another Freshman Jeremy Frye (74-74-74=222) shot two-over-par 74 in all three rounds and finished in a tie for 43rd. Freshman Dusty Isabell (79-80-79=239) competed in his first event as an individual and managed to finish 90th.

Baylor (859) finished the tournament just seven strokes behind SMU who won the tournament with a team total of 852. BYU (862) finished three shots behind Baylor, which was good enough for third, while Colorado State (866) finished fourth and San Diego State (869) rounded out the top-five teams. Baylor has won this event three times over the past seven years and finished this year with another impressive result.

Baylor will return to action May 15-16 at the Big 12 Championships in Hutchinson, Kansas hosted by Kansas State.
