Softball Falls to No. 3 LSU in 10 Innings

WACO, Texas-The Baylor softball team jumped out to an early 3-0 lead on No. 3 and top-seeded LSU, however, the Tigers tied the game with three runs in the third and then posted four in the tenth to defeat the Lady Bears 7-3 in NCAA regional action at Getterman Stadium.
With the loss, Baylor falls to the elimination round and will face either Illinois or Seton Hall at 7:00 p.m. to determine who will face LSU in the regional finals.
Baylor opened up the game with a single run in the first. With one out, Carrie Leerberg and Kelly Osburn hit back-to-back singles as Leerberg eventually came around to score after stealing third to give the Lady Bears a 1-0 lead.
April Luce gave the Lady Bears a 3-0 lead in the second inning when she took a pitch from LSU starter Kristin Schmidt and belted it over the left-field fence with Kim Wilmoth aboard for the first home run at the Waco Regional and her second of the season.
LSU came right back in third, as Camille Harris opened up the inning with a solo home run and Leslie Klein hit a two RBI triple to tie the game.
The game remained tied throughout the next six innings, as Schmidt and Baylor pitcher Lisa Ferguson worked out of several jams to keep the score at 3-3.
After Baylor was unable to score in the ninth after placing runners on first and second with no outs, LSU finally broke through in the tenth with four runs. The Tigers took the lead when two runs scored on a fielder's choice by Stephanie Hill.
Schmidt shut down the Lady Bears in the bottom of the inning, as she moved to 34-5 on the year after allowing 11 hits and three runs while tossing a complete game.
Ferguson took the loss, allowing four runs on four hits in 5.2 innings of work as she dropped to 16-7 on the year.
Leerberg led the way for Baylor at the plate, going three for four with a run scored. Schwethelm and Wilmoth also added two hits each for the Lady Bears.
