WACO, Texas-Following an online vote, Baylor pitcher Cristin Vitek was named CSTV Student Athlete of the Month after collecting 64% percent of the votes to beat out three other student-athlete nominees for the honor.
Vitek was eligible for the honor after being named CSTV Student-Athlete of the Week for her incredible 28-strikeout performance against North Carolina in the NCAA Softball Championships.
In the game against North Carolina, Vitek was locked in a pitchers duel with UNC's Crystal Cox and went 16 full innings and struck out an NCAA record 28 batters along the way as the Lady Bears advanced in the winner's bracket with a 1-0 triumph.
Vitek tossed 185 pitches in the game, 139 for strikes, and carried a no-hitter into the eleventh inning. She allowed just two walks in the game-both intentional- and at one point struck out 10 straight Tar Heels.
Vitek finished the season with a 0.89 ERA and a 31-7 record. The junior pitched 17 complete games and struck out 264 in 250.1 innings while earning first-team all-Big 12 Conference honors.
Kate Jaspers (softball/Mississippi State), Kurt Suzuki (baseball/Cal State Fullerton) and Kelley Graff (water polo/USC) also earned CSTV Student-Athlete of the Week honors from the organization in May, however, were unable to defeat Vitek in an online vote for student-athlete of the month.
The 2004 squad became the first Baylor team in school history to make the NCAA tournament. The team also established new school records for wins (48), conference wins (11) and achieved the highest ranking in school history (19).
