After working in helmets and shorts for two days, the Baylor football team strapped on the shoulder pads for Wednesday afternoon's two-hour practice on the Floyd Casey Stadium grass fields. "The tempo was good," said Baylor coach Guy Morriss. "I was really pleased with the way the defense performed today. They were really running to the football and playing with a lot of confidence. That's good to see. We just have to keep moving up the ladder and take another step tomorrow. "I'd be real worried if our offense was marching up and down the field, I guarantee you," he added. "I think it is just a matter of timing and technique on the offensive side of the ball. People were trying hard, we just have to get mentally focused on assignments, but that's what training camp is for." Baylor will hold single practices Thursday and Friday at 4 p.m. before going through its first double-session of the fall on Saturday in preparation for its Sept. 4 season-opener against UAB. Friday's workout will be the first of the fall in full pads. Baylor Fall Camp Notes: For the third consecutive day, Baylor senior defensive end/tight end Luke Groth (Fort Stockton, Texas) and senior wide receiver Marques Roberts (Luling, Texas) were held out of practice due to injuries ... Roberts hopes to return to practice early next week, while Groth may be sidelined for 7-10 more days ... Morriss said a pair of true freshmen, wide receiver Trey Payne III (La Marque, Texas) and offensive lineman Chris Green (Richmond, Texas), have caught his eye in the early going ... Quipped Morriss of Payne, "He's (Payne) quicker than a hiccup." ... Sophomore junior college transfer Yancy Boatner (Hamilton, Texas) is working at center for the Bears ... The 2004 Meet the Bears Day has been scheduled for Aug. 21 at Floyd Casey Stadium.
