The Baylor football team wrapped up its first week of fall camp with a 73-play controlled scrimmage Saturday afternoon in Floyd Casey Stadium. The afternoon workout was the Bears' second of the day and their first this fall in full pads. "I thought it (the scrimmage) was some good and some not so good," said Baylor coach Guy Morriss following his squad's first day of two-a-days. "We just have to be more consistent with our execution. We made some plays on both sides of the ball today. "We've had better practices this week than we did this afternoon, but I think we did some good things out there," he added. "I liked watching big Paul (Mosley) run, he's a load and I thought he did a good job. Anthony Krieg looked pretty good and I thought Jonathan (Golden) at times flashed. If he can be more consistent, he'll see more playing time." Redshirt freshman quarterback Terrance Parks (Lufkin, Texas) completed 4-of-7 passes on the day for 97 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Baylor offense. He threw a 40-yard scoring strike to true freshman wide receiver Nate Cook (Allen, Texas) and a 34-yard touchdown pass to redshirt freshman wide receiver Derrick Jones (Wylie, Texas). Junior college transfer Dane King (Gonzales, Texas) was also impressive leading the Bears' offense, as he hit on 5-of-10 passes for 87 yards and one touchdown. King tossed a 34-yard touchdown pass to sophomore wide receiver Dominique Zeigler (Killeen, Texas) for the first score of the scrimmage. King also completed a 31-yard pass to Zeigler during the workout. Sophomore quarterback Shawn Bell (China Spring, Texas) was 3-of-8 in the air for 43 yards and no scores. "One of them (King or Bell) needs to (separate from the other in Baylor the quarterback race) by the end of this next week," Morriss said. "And, they probably will. This is going to be a huge week for us in a lot of places. We need to five (offensive) lineman we can play with next week, so there's going to have to be a separating in there as well. "I think we are pretty set defensively and I feel a little bit better about that group," he continued. "But, there are some of those young kids in the secondary pushing pretty hard so we'll answer that next week as well. Through next Saturday we are going to get after it pretty good, then it is time to start tapering off and we'll start introducing the game plans, start polishing and getting ready for UAB." Sophomore Brandon Whitaker (Edmond, Okla.) led all rushers with 29 yards on three carries. Senior running back Jonathan Golden (Sugar Land, Texas) was the scrimmage's second-leading rusher with 26 yards on eight carries and scored the only rushing touchdown on a 4-yard run. Eleven Bears recorded at least one carry during the scrimmage, as their ground attacked racked up 102 yards on 44 carries for the day. Zeigler was one of nine Baylor players to catch at least one pass, as he finished the day with a team-high three receptions for 89 yards and one touchdown. Following Saturday's first double-session of fall camp, the Bears will workout once on Sunday, then go twice on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, with single workouts slated for Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Fall classes on the Baylor campus begin Aug. 23rd. "For us, next week is going to be the key," said Morriss. "Next week has to be a big week for us. We have three days in there where we get to work twice and we can't waste any of those practices. We've had a good week up until this point, but we have to take the next step next week, period." Notes: Senior defensive end Khari Long (Wichita Falls, Texas) was given the day off to participate in Baylor's summer graduation ceremony ... Six Bears were held out of the scrimmage with injuries ... Junior linebacker Tyler Lindstrom (Omaha, Neb.) broke his hand during the workout ...
