Golf's Baca Opens U.S. Amateur With 74

MAMARONECK, N.Y. - Baylor senior Ryan Baca (Richmond, Texas) is tied for 39th after shooting a 74 in the first round of the 104th U.S. Amateur golf championship at the 7,266-yard, par-70 Winged Foot Golf Club East Course Monday. Baca's round was highlighted by birdies on the par-4 10th and 18th, propelling him to an even-par score of 35 on the back nine. Colombian Oscar Alvarez fired a 67, including a 31 on the back nine to take a two-stroke lead over Ryan Moore of Puyallup, Wash. Only three other players shot par on the rain-beaten course. Baca tees off at 7:24 a.m. Tuesday and the tournament continues through Sunday. ESPN2's coverage of the event begins Wednesday at noon.
