Soccer Cruises to Win Over Houston

Waco, Texas -- After falling behind early to Houston 1-0, the Baylor soccer team responded with six unanswered goals as the Bears defeated the Cougars 6-1 in the final tune-up before the start of the regular season. In the win, six separate players scored goals for the Bears as Baylor finished the exhibition portion of the schedule with a perfect record of 2-0.

"It was great to have so many separate players score goals for us today," head coach George Van Linder said. "So far, the play of our younger players has been outstanding. I think everybody is ready and excited to get the season started."

Houston grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the opening minutes, however, Baylor responded with two goals to take a 2-1 lead into halftime. Junior Jennifer Martin, a transfer from SMU, opened the scoring for Baylor to tie the game at 1-1 before Tiffany Boshers gave the Bears the lead for good with her goal in the late stages of the half.

Baylor would control the play the rest of the way, as the Bears outscored the Cougars 4-0 in the second half. Brittani Zonker opened up the scoring in the second half with her goal to give the Bears a 3-1 lead. Junior midfielder Katie Chicoine followed with her second goal of the pre-season to give the Bears a three goal lead.

Newcomers Jessica Hutton and Anna Schuch closed out the scoring on the day, as the Bears coasted to a 6-1 win.

For the second straight game, goalkeepers Kristin Weegar and Ashley Holder combined for the win.

With two exhibition victories behind them, the Baylor soccer team opens up regular-season play when the Bears travel to South Bend, Ind., to face second-ranked Notre Dame. The Fighting Irish, coached by former Baylor head coach Randy Waldrum, and the Bears will kick-off the 2004 season at 6:30 p.m.
