WACO, Texas (AP) - Junior college transfer Dane King threw two touchdown passes and the defense produced another score Saturday night to help Baylor bounce back from a humiliating opener for a 24-17 victory over Texas State.
King, who committed five turnovers last week in a 56-14 loss to UAB, stung the NCAA Division I-AA Bobcats with scoring tosses of 3 yards to tight end Mike Miller and 26 to receiver Margues Roberts.
King was 16-of-30 for 224 yards. He was intercepted twice.
Freshman Chase Wasson led a late rally for Texas State (1-1) with a 74-yard touchdown pass to K.R. Carpenter. He also engineered a 73-yard drive ending with 7-yard scoring run by Douglass Sherman.
Wasson, starting his first collegiate game, lost a fumble with 1:33 left when he was hit by Justin Crooks. Baylor's Maurice Linguist recovered at the Bobcats' 30 and the Bears ran out the clock.
Wasson was 12-of-27 for 164 yards, but was sacked five times.
Roberts' TD catch with 10 seconds left in the half to gave Baylor a 21-3 lead. The score was set up by a 20-yard completion from King to Dominque Zeigler.
Baylor's defense put the Bears ahead 7-0 early in the first period. Lineman Montez Murphy batted a pitch by Wasson, and Crooks scored after scooping up the ball on the 4.
Baylor improved to 6-0 against Texas State. The Bobcats, of the Southland Conference, beat Angelo State 45-10 in their opener.
