WACO, Texas - The Baylor women's tennis team will host its annual fall tournament when eight teams join the Bears for the Baylor Fall Tennis Invitational (Sept. 17-19). Play will begin on Friday morning at 9 a.m. at the Baylor Tennis Center and conclude with championship matches in both singles and doubles on Sunday.
In his quest to prepare his team for Big 12 and NCAA competition, third-year head coach Joey Scrivano has assembled an impressive field for the tournament. Joining Baylor in the nine-team field are Arizona, Georgia Tech, Rice, SMU, TCU, Texas, UT-Arlington, and University of Tulsa.
The field includes 47 players, 11 of which are currently ranked among the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) top 125 along with the No. 1 ranked doubles team in the nation, Arizona's Maja Mlakar and Dianne Hollands. Hollands is the tournament's top-ranked singles player at No. 7.
Scrivano returns five players, Daniela Covello, Zuzana Krchnakova, Iva Mihaylova, Carolin Walter and Klara Zrustova off last season's team and has added two talented newcomers, Zuzana Cerna (Czech Republic), and Zuzana Zemenova (Slovakia). Walter is ranked No. 31 in the ITA preseason rankings and Walter and her doubles partner Daniela Covello are ranked No. 57.
"Our team is excited to get the fall season underway and play in front of the Baylor community. This year's tournament field is the strongest one yet and will be a great early indicator of where our team stands," said Scrivano.
