Baylor sophomore Jeremy Alcorn (Brownwood, Texas) stayed consistent, firing his third straight round of 2-under par 70 to finish second and lead the Bears to a third-place team showing in the final round at the Baylor Invitational Tuesday at the 7,250-yard, par-72 Bear Ridge Golf Club.
Alcorn shot 210 for the tournament to finish three strokes out of the lead and three strokes ahead of the third-place finisher. He led the tournament in par-4 scoring, shooting 5-under par and averaging 3.83 strokes per par-4. Alcorn, who tied for the tournament lead with two eagles, also played the par-5s at 4-under to rank among the leaders and averaged 4.67 strokes on those holes.
Sophomore Matt Briggs (San Antonio, Texas) tied for eighth at 217 with a career-low round of 2-under par 70 in the final round. Briggs tied for second with 39 pars for the tournament and played the par-5s at 5-under par.
Sophomore Jeremy Frye (Palestine, Texas) shot an even-par 72 Tuesday to finish 22nd at 222. Frye led the tournament with 44 pars, five more than any other competitor. Sophomore Brian Meck (Austin, Texas) also shot even-par 72 and tied for 23rd at 223 in his first start as a Bear.
Junior Will McDonald (Birmingham, Ala.) shot a 75 in the final round to tie for 37th at 230. Sophomore Dusty Isabell (Athens, Texas) tied for fifth playing as an individual, finishing with a 73 and a 54-hole total of 216. Sophomore Wes Williams (Franklin, Tenn.) tied for 39th at 231, including his second straight round of 75.
Lamar claimed the team title by shooting 5-under par 859 for the tournament, seven strokes ahead of Texas-Arlington (866) and 13 ahead of Baylor (872). Lamar's Dawie Van der Walt played outstanding in the final round, firing a 66, to card a 54-hole score of 207 to take individual medalist honors. Alcorn was three strokes back at 210, followed by Arkansas-Little Rock's Patrick Sullivan and Southeastern Louisiana's Hugo Leon at 213.
The Bears return to action at the William H. Tucker at the University of New Mexico's Championship Course Oct. 1-2 in Albuquerque, N.M.
