WACO, Texas - Baylor's Willie Andrews and Braelon Davis earned Big 12 Conference Player of the Week honors, the league office announced Monday. Maurice Lane also was honored as defensive player of the week by the Dallas Morning News.
A junior outside safety from Longview, Texas, Andrews was named defensive player of the week, while Davis, a redshirt freshman defensive back from Dallas, Texas, was selected as special teams player of the week. It marks the first time in the nine-season history of the Big 12 that two Baylor players earned the conference's weekly honor in the same week.
Andrews tallied five tackles in Saturday's 37-14 victory over North Texas at Floyd Casey Stadium, three of which were behind the line. That tally included two sacks as Andrews set personal career highs for tackles for loss and sacks. The All-America candidate also had three quarterback hurries and forced a fumble.
Davis provided Baylor's first touchdown of the game when he blocked a UNT punt at the goal line and then recovered it in the end zone. It was Davis' first career blocked kick and his first career touchdown. It was the second non-offensive score of the season for the Bears and Baylor's eighth non-offensive score since the beginning of the 2003 season.
Lane, a junior free safety from Killeen, Texas, led the Bears with 13 tackles, 12 of which were solo efforts. He and Andrews led a defensive unit that held North Texas to one first down and 30 yards of total offense in the second half. Lane becomes the first Bear to receive the Dallas Morning News' weekly honor since Derrick Cash was so honored after last year's upset of Colorado.
Baylor (2-1) begins Big 12 play this Saturday, traveling to Austin, Texas, for an 11:30 a.m. CDT kickoff against No. 5 Texas at Darrell K. Royal Stadium.
