Sept. 28, 2004
Baylor head football coach Guy Morriss sat down with the media for his weekly press conference to discuss the upcoming game against Texas as well as last week's win over the Mean Green.
On Texas' running game....
"They are a very athletic team that runs well. They have a tremendous offensive line, mobile guys that can move around. They are number one in the nation right now in rushing. It's hard to get a feel; but, they just let their big lineman wear you down. It will be a huge challenge for us."
On Texas quarterback Vincent Young....
"Vincent Young is a talented quarterback. He seems to be throwing a little bit less; but, he is an elusive guy that poses two problems for our defense."
On Texas ....
"You look at Texas and you don't see a lot of flaws. They are very athletic with a lot of depth and great speed. They have a tremendous running game. Defensively they are very physical with four talented players up front. We need to find Derrick Johnson and know where he is at all times. Everywhere you look you don't see weaknesses. So, the question is finding out exactly where you can attack them."
On the win over North Texas last week ....
"I think we have put the North Texas game to bed. I don't want them to celebrate to long, it's time to get ready for Texas."
On how long the team will focus on last week's win ....
"I think after a few minutes they were ready to shift their focus to Texas. They know they have to get a few things corrected and I liked their whole demeanor heading into this week. I think they are focused."
On what a win over Texas would mean ....
"I think from a confidence standpoint a win would be tremendous. I will worry about that if it happens."
On the defensive effort last week and what the defense needs to do this week ....
"I think the defense picked it up this week. Other than one or two plays the unit improved. This week, we have to keep as fresh as we can. It will be important for us to keep our gap integrity and fill up the lanes. We have to play with the same kind of reckless abandon that we did last week."
On how to create pressure against the Texas offense....
"I don't think we can line up and just send four to get consistent pressure. At the same time, blitzing involves a certain degree of risk. We will get after them some; but, I don't think we can send the house every down."
On his thoughts after the North Texas game ....
"I think I feel a lot better after the North Texas game. I was pleased the way we improved from a technical standpoint after watching the tape of the game."
On the style of the Texas defense ....
"Texas does play a lot of zone. Other than that, they are basically the same defensively. They line up eight guys to try to stop the run."
On what it will take to upset Texas....
"If we can get off to a good start and make some positive things happen our confidence will continue to grow. I think the first two or three series of the game will be really important."
