OXFORD, Miss. - Passing and ball control proved to be Baylor's undoing as it dropped a 3-0 decision (11-30, 27-30, 26-30) to host Ole Miss in volleyball action at the Magnolia Invitational Friday night at Gillom Sports Center.
Sophomore middle blocker Desiree Guilliard-Young (Berkeley, Calif.) led the Bears (1-2) with nine kills, while sophomore right-side hitter Nicole LeBlanc (Tampa, Fla.) had eight and junior outside hitters Stella Odion (Houston, Texas) and Kelly Spriggs (Houston, Texas) had five each. Odion led the Bears with 11 digs, while junior middle blocker Adeline Meira (Sao Paulo, Brazil) had seven blocks.
The Bears couldn't get anything going in game one, struggling both offensively and defensively. Leading 12-11, Ole Miss ripped off the last 18 points of the game in a row to take a one-game lead, 30-11, tying the lowest point total ever in a game by Baylor since rally scoring began in 2001. The Bears hit -.176 compared to .400 for the Lady Rebels.
Baylor fell behind early in game two at 11-6, but cut the lead to 11-9. Ole Miss led 16-13, then scored five straight to go up 21-13. The Bears then turned the tide on the Lady Rebels and went on a 13-4 run, including eight straight points, to take a 26-25 lead. Ole Miss grabbed the lead right back, then scored the final three points to win the game, 30-27.
Ole Miss took control early in game three and led by as many as seven at 20-13. The Lady Rebels had built up a big enough cushion as they held off the Bears to clinch the match, 30-26.
Jaclyn Toohey had a match-high 12 kills, while Tricia Eble had eight. Lucianna Lima recorded a match-high 12 digs, while Elena Garcia had eight.
The Bears return to action in the Magnolia Invitational as they face Eastern Michigan Saturday at 11 a.m.
