WACO, TX - The Baylor men's golf team is second place after the first day of competition at the Baylor Invitational. The Bears find themselves only five shots back after the second round concluded at the rain soaked event.
Redshirt freshman Carmine Mediate (Southlake, Texas), who is playing on the Baylor Green team, is the overall leader after the first day of play. Mediate shot consecutive two-under-par rounds of 70 and takes a one shot advantage into the third and final round Tuesday. Mediate has helped push the Baylor Green team into a tie for fifth.
Junior Jeremy Alcorn (Brownwood, Texas) shot rounds of 71 and even-par 72 to place him in a tie for fifth. Redshirt freshman Bill Allcorn (Abilene, Texas) fired two rounds of even-par 72 to place him in a tie for sixth. Senior Ryan Baca (Richmond, Texas) shot back-to back rounds of 73 and is in a tie for 11th, while junior Colton Turnquist (Austin, Texas), is in a tie for 36th after firing rounds of 77 and 74. Junior Jeremy Frye (Palestine, Texas) completed play in a tie for 45th after rounds of 79 and 73.
The Baylor Green team which is led by the leader of the tournament, redshirt freshman Carmine Mediate, is in a tie for fifth after the first day. Sophomore Wes Williams (Franklin, Tenn.) is in a tie for 11th after consecutive rounds of 73. Junior Chase Thomas (Dallas, Texas) is currently tied for 54th (79-75=154) while sophomore Matt Briggs (San Antonio) is tied for 59th (81-75=156). Also tied for 59th is senior Will McDonald (Birmingham, Ala.). Playing as an individual is sophomore Brian Meck (Austin, Texas), who is tied for sixth after shooting rounds of 74 and 70.
The Bears are currently only five shots behind the team leader Lamar after the first two rounds. The Bears are holding a four shot advantage over third place Southeastern Louisiana. UT-Arlington is in fourth place while Louisiana-Monroe is in a tie with the Baylor Green team for fifth.
The third and final round will be played Tuesday morning with results being posted soon after completion of the round.
