WACO, Texas - At the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships this weekend, two Baylor Bears have won both of their Saturday matches to advance to the round of 16 in the prequalifying tournament at UCLA.
Zuzana Cerna, 13th seed, defeated Perl Lauren from USD 6-2, 6-4 in the round of 64 and went on to beat Virginia Tomatis from Ole Miss 7-6 (2), 6-0 in the round of 32. Teammate Daniela Covello also won in both rounds, first defeating Jelena Jovic of Pepperdine 6-3, 6-4 then Tulsa's Carla Zabaleta 6-4, 6-3.
Play will continue Sunday at 9 a.m. Cerna will play Ana Jerman from Wake Forest and Covello plays Amanda Fink from USC. Both matches are scheduled for 9 a.m. Eastern.
Carolin Walter, who is also at the tournament, will play Tuesday in the singles qualifying bracket as well as with Covello in doubles.
