COLLEGE STATION, Texas - After three rounds of play at the Southwest Regional tournament at Texas A&M, Baylor finally began to show weakness after having 13 wins between the singles and doubles players. At the end of today, Zuzana Zemenova, Zuzana Cerna, and Klara Zrustova advanced to the singles quarterfinal as did the doubles tandem Daniela Covello and Carolin Walter.
Singles matches opened day three and the Bears started with the top-seeded Zemenova's 6-1, 6-4 victory over LSU's Marina Chiavelli. Zemenova then played 15th-seeded Anna Blagodarova from Texas A&M at noon and won 6-2, 6-2. Covello played Texas Courtney Zauft but was defeated 7-5, 6-4 and sent to the consolation bracket where she beat SMU's Svetlana Kouzmenko 6-2, 6-3. Zuzana Krchnakova was defeated in the main draw by ninth-seeded Blair DiSesa of Rice 6-2, 6-3. In her consolation match, Krchnakova beat Sam Houston State's Irina Sotnikova 6-1, 6-2.
Continuing to advance is twelfth-seeded Cerna who beat TCU's Gloriann Lopez 6-0, 6-4 and also Texas' eighth-seeded Kendra Strohm 6-2, 6-1. Walter also won her round of 32 match against Texas A&M's Tiffany Clifford 6-3, 6-1 but couldn't come up with another win against UTA's Klara Jagosova and lost 7-6, 6-2. Iva Mihaylova dropped her morning match to Dominique Karas from Rice 6-1, 5-7, 6-5 but defeated LSU's Tiffany Tucker 6-4, 6-2 in the consolation bracket. And in the last morning match today, tenth-seeded Zrustova defeated Texas A&M's Marisa Druss 6-0, 6-4 and later beat Anna Sydorska from TCU 6-3, 6-2.
Doubles action began once singles wrapped play. The Bear duo of Covello and Walter, third seeds, continued to thrive as they posted a 8-4 win against TCU's Gloriann Lopez and Andrea Morgado. The other doubles teams lost in the round of 16. Krchnakova and Mihaylova, 16th seeds, went down 8-2 versus sixth-seeded Anna Blagodarova and Tiffany Clifford from Texas A&M. Finally, eighth-seeded Cerna and Zrustova were upset by the thirteenth-seeded TCU pair of Helena Besovic and Anna Sydorska 8-4.
Singles quarterfinal matches being at 9 a.m. and doubles begins at 3:30 p.m.
