COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Though Baylor's doubles team was eliminated in the quarterfinal rounds, two singles Bears have advanced to the final match in singles action. Top-seeded Zuzana Zemenova will play her twelfth-seeded teammate Zuzana Cerna Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. at Texas A&M's George P Mitchell's Tennis Center to determine which player will hold the ITA's Southwest Regional singles title.
Baylor also advanced to the singles consolation finals with Zuzana Krchnakova wins in throughout the bracket. She defeated teammate Daniela Covello after Covello withdrew from the match with an injury. She then went on to beat Texas A&M's Jordan Ale 6-3, 6-3 which placed her in the finals match against second-seeded Petra Dizdar from Texas, who early won against Baylor's Iva Mihaylova 6-3, 7-6 in the quarterfinal match. Krchnakova will play Dizdar Tuesday morning for the consolation title.
Baylor's doubles action ended today in the quarterfinal round when Texas' Mia Marovic and Kendra Strohm upset third-seeded Daniela Covello and Carolin Walter 8-2.
In today's singles bracket, Zemenova win over seventh-seeded Ana Cetnik from Texas came early with a 6-4, 3-0- final score as Cetnik left the match with an injury. Zemenova then defeated third-seeded Helena Besovic of TCU 6-0, 6-2 to advance to the final match tomorrow.
Klara Zrustova, the tournament's tenth seed, faced Rice's Dominique Karas and won 6-2, 6-2 as Cerna defeated UTA's Klara Jagosova 6-3, 3-6, 6-4. The two Baylor wins paired the Bears to play each other in the semifinals where Cerna battled Zrustova to win the match 7-5, 6-3.
Cerna's eventual win over Zrustova matched her again to play against another teammate. This time Cerna will compete with Zemenova for the singles title. The two Bears have automatic spots in the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships hosted by The Ohio State University at the Racquet Club of Columbus during Nov. 3-6.
"The girls have played hard and well. Anytime you have to final two players competing for the title looks good. We are excited, and I'm proud of the girls' play," head coach Joey Scrivano said.
The final singles match is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. tomorrow, Tuesday, Oct. 25. The result of that match will be posted at www.baylorbears.com.
