PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. - The Bears are continuing to win matches at the Riviera/ITA All-American tournament this week in Pacific Palisades, Calif. Both Zuzana Cerna and Carolin Walter earned spots in the singles round of 16 played Wednesday, Oct. 5.
In the rounds of 64, Cerna defeated Vicky Jones from Tennessee 6-2, 6-2. Unfortunately, Covello fell to BYU's Lauren Jones, who ranks 75th nationally, 6-3, 6-2. Later this morning, Walter beat Nina Suvak of Florida 6-4, 3-6, 6-4.
Covello moved into the consolation draw and in the first round defeated 13th-seeded Ashlee Davis from Wake Forest 6-2, 2-6, 7-6(8). She will next play Iowa's Megan Racette.
Later in the round of 32, Cerna came up with another win against Purdue's Randi Schuler, 6-4, 6-1 and Walter battled for a victory against Duke's Clelia Deltour ending with 7-5, 6-1.
In Wednesday's singles round of 16, Cerna will play Elena Gantcheva from UNLV and Walter will play Cal's Cristina Visico.
In doubles, Covello and Walter dropped an 8-5 match against Whitney Benik and Nina Suvak, Florida's fourth-seeded tandem.
Singles play continues Wednesday with the round of 16.
