WACO, Texas - Four and a half months removed from the best season in the program's history, Baylor's baseball team returns to the practice field Friday as fall drills begin in preparation for the 2006 season. The Bears return 14 lettermen, including four position starters and seven pitchers, from a 2005 squad that claimed a share of the Big 12 Conference title and reached the national semifinals at the College World Series.
"Everyone is anxious to get back out there," 12th-year head coach Steve Smith said. "Obviously last season was a memorable run. But once you've tasted success at that level, you're eager to taste it again. That journey begins in the fall."
The Bears will practice Friday and Saturday afternoons before beginning a series of 12 intrasquad scrimmages Sunday at 2 p.m. The scrimmages, held at Baylor Ballpark over the next three weeks, are open to the public. Baylor's annual "Burgers on the Berm" will coincide with the Saturday, Oct. 22, 6 p.m. intrasquad.
