PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. - After almost a week's worth of play, the Bears finally began singles main draw matches at the Riviera/ITA All-American tournament in Pacific Palisades, Calif. Zuzana Cerna and Carolin Walter played in the round of 32 today, Oct. 6 after nine straight wins between the two of them in prequalifying and qualifying tournaments.
ITA's 122nd-ranked Cerna, who posted six wins already in California, was finally defeated by fourth-seeded Robin Stephenson from Alabama 4-6, 6-4, 6-0. Stephenson is also ranked fourth in ITA's preseason poll. The loss placed Cerna in the singles consolation bracket with a match scheduled for 10:30 a.m. against BYU's Olga Boulytcheva, who is nationally ranked 69th.
Walter extended her three-game winning streak four for the tournament when she beat Pepperdine's Bianca Dulgheru 6-2, 2-6, 6-0. ITA ranks Walter 29th and Dulgheru 18th. Walter advanced to the round of 16 where she will play third-seeded Nicole Leimbach from TCU, who is also nationally ranked third, at 9 a.m. tomorrow morning, Oct. 7.
