PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. - The Riviera/ITA All-American proved to be a legitimate national test for the Bears this season. After a week of matches, Carolin Walter was eliminated from the main draw after her loss in the round of 16. Zuzana Cerna played through the quarterfinals of the singles consolation bracket before being eliminated.
Walter was defeated by third-seeded Nicole Leimbach from TCU 6-3, 6-3 in the round of 16. Walter won four of five matches played in California all of which were against ranked players, two of which in the top 25 while Walter is ranked 29th in the same poll.
Cerna competed in the consolation's first draw and upset USD's Emma Murphy 6-4, 6-4. Cerna is nationally ranked 122nd while Murphy sits at 19th. In the next round, the quarterfinals, Cerna played the nation's No. 6 player Shadisha Robinson from Georgia but lost 6-3, 6-3 to wrap up Baylor's matches at the All-American.
Head coach Joey Scrivano was impressed with his girls and pleased with all of their efforts. This was a tough tournament with the highest ranked players and it gave Baylor's participants good experience.
Although Baylor's play halted in California, three other players are competing at the NTC Invitational during Oct. 8-10 in Flushing Meadows, N.Y. Zuzana Krchnakova, Iva Mihaylova, and Klara Zrustova all play tomorrow morning.
