Nov. 21, 2005

WACO, Texas - Baylor women's tennis' head coach Joey Scrivano was named the 2005 Texas Tennis Coaches Associations' Coach of the Year in the college class. Scrivano is currently in his fourth year at Baylor and has led his teams to two Big 12 championships and two NCAA appearances. Last season was arguably the program's best as the team finished the year ranked 14th nationally; Baylor also boasted having the women's NCAA singles champion, Zuzana Zemenova.

Scrivano has played a central part in building up Baylor's women's program since he inherited it in 2002 with only three returning position players. This fall, Scrivano's program includes four individuals and one doubles team nationally ranked by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, numbers the women's team has never seen before. Two individuals and the doubles duo are all sitting at spots in the top 50. Zemenova also became the program's highest-ever ranked player at No. 7.

TTCA's coaching award is given to coaches in seven categories ranging from junior high to college. Worthy coaches are nominated by peers and chosen by the TTCA's selection committee. Nominations are based on the nominee's effectiveness as a coach, dedication to his school, love of the game, knowledge of the game/rules, sportsmanship, and other various characteristics that detail a positive, effective member of the tennis community.

This is the second year that a Baylor coach has been recognized for outstanding coaching and sportsmanship. In 2004, men's tennis' head coach Matt Knoll took home the honor in the college class.

Scrivano will be honored at TTCA's annual Hall of Fame banquet at Newks Tennis Ranch in New Braunfels, Texas, on Friday, Dec. 2.

After having a successful fall tournament season, Scrivano and his Bears look to return to the court on Jan. 11 when they host SMU at 2 p.m.
